For the 24th and final time, the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play was contested March 22-26 from Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas.
And it went out as the biggest yet since it was a designated event.
In March 2023, the PGA Tour announced there will not be another WGC Match Play tournament following this year, although there is talk of there being a match play event somewhere on the PGA Tour schedule in the coming years.
The 64 players in the field were placed into 16 groups of four players (based on world ranking) and played a round-robin format Wednesday-Friday. The 16 winners from each group played bracket style until a winner was decided Sunday afternoon.
Sam Burns defeated Cameron Smith in the championship match 6&5. It was his fifth career PGA Tour win.
Burns also beat Scottie Scheffler, the defending champion, in the semi-finals earlier on Sunday. Rory McIlroy took down Scheffler in the third-place match.
Every player in the field was paid. Players who did not make the Round of 16 were paid on a sliding scale based on how many points they earned in group play.
The purse was $20 million.
