  • Scottie Scheffler is by far the best player when it comes to Strokes Gained: Approach.
  • Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy are among the best iron players.
  • The best iron players typically are the best overall players.

Iron play is extremely important for success in the game of golf, especially on the PGA Tour.

It can make up for weak aspects of a player’s game. For example, if a player consistently hits his iron shots close to the hole, it can make up for struggles with chipping and putting. Also, many of the best iron players are consistent winners on the PGA Tour.

Here are the best iron players on the PGA Tour:

Scottie Scheffler

Not only is Scheffler the best overall player this season, he’s also the best iron player. Scheffler is by far the No. 1 ranked player when it comes to Strokes Gained: Approach.

Going into the U.S. Open, he’s gaining 1.5 strokes on approach shots, a full half shot more than any other player.

Corey Conners

Based on Conners’ iron play, he should have more than just one top-10 finish in 16 starts this season.

Conners is second on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Approach. It’s his putting that has held him back.

Tony Finau

Finau has made a number of Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teams, and it’s primarily because of his iron play.

Going into the U.S. Open, Finau is fourth on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Approach.

Xander Schauffele

Schauffele isn’t a flashy player by any means, but the way he consistently hits his irons makes him one of the best players in the game.

His iron play was a major reason why he won the PGA Championship, and going into the U.S. Open, he is sixth in Strokes Gained: Approach.

Honorable mention: Rory McIlroy, Tom Hoge, Justin Thomas, Aaron Rai.
