Iron play is extremely important for success in the game of golf, especially on the PGA Tour.ย

It can make up for weak aspects of a playerโ€™s game. For example, if a player consistently hits his iron shots close to the hole, it can make up for struggles with chipping and putting. Also, many of the best iron players are consistent winners on the PGA Tour.

Here are the best iron players on the PGA Tour:

Scottie Scheffler

Not only is Scheffler the best overall player in the game, he’s also one of the best iron players. Going into the PGA Championship in 2025, he ranks No. 1 on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Approach.

In 2024, Scheffler gained 1.269 shots on average in Strokes Gained: Approach. The next closest player was Tony Finau at 0.808.

Collin Morikawa

Morikawa is known for his ball-striking, so it makes sense he’s on this list.

Going into the PGA Championship, Morikawa ranks No. 4 in Strokes Gained: Approach. The 28-year-old has been in contention a bunch this season but his putter has let him down.

Sepp Straka

Straka has won twice on the PGA Tour so far this season and his iron play is a major reason why.

Going into the PGA Championship, Straka ranks No. 2 on Tour in Strokes Gained: Approach.

Justin Thomas

Thomas is having a terrific 2025 season, and his success can be attributed to his iron play.

Going into the PGA Championship, Thomas ranks No. 5 in Strokes Gained: Approach.

Honorable mention: Henrick Norlander, J.J. Spaun, Xander Schauffele, Shane Lowry, Patrick Cantlay, Viktor Hovland, and Tommy Fleetwood.
