WNBA Picks & Predictions: Tuesday, May 14

Fever vs. Sun – 8 p.m. ET

Pick: Sun -5.5 (-110)

Caitlin Clark will make her WNBA regular-season debut when the Indiana Fever travel to face the Connecticut Sun on May 14.

The Fever will then play two games against the New York Liberty.

That means Clark’s opening week will feature three games against two of the top-three teams in the league.

So much for a welcome party.

It’s a stretch that would be difficult for any team, especially for a young Indiana squad that won 13 games last year. Only two teams in the WNBA won fewer games than the Fever in 2023.

By the end of the season, betting market ratings had the Fever roughly 4.5 points worse than the average team on a neutral court. The Sun, on the other hand, were about four points better than the average team on a neutral.

This line seems like an overreaction ahead of Clark’s debut. Given her popularity, it might even get shorter.

But I like the Sun at anything under two full possessions in the season opener.

Lynx vs. Storm – 10 p.m. ET

Pick: Lynx +10.5 (-110)

The Seattle Storm made the most significant moves in the offseason, bringing in Skylar Diggins-Smith and Nneka Ogwumike to form a big three with Jewell Loyd.

It’s a lot like what the New York Liberty did last offseason, forming a superteam that made it to the WNBA Finals.

But it’s important to remember that the Liberty started slowly due to growing pains. They even lost to the Washington Mystics outright in the season opener.

I don’t think Seattle has to worry about losing Game 1, but the Minnesota Lynx are better than what the betting market rates them.

The Lynx have one of the best coaches in the league, Cheryl Reeve. Napheesa Collier is one of the top players in the sport. Diamond Miller is poised for a massive leap in Year 2.

This line is about three points too high, making +10 or better worth a bet before the opener.
