  • The IBO and IBF World Lightweight titles are on the line this weekend as Vasiliy Lomachenko takes on George Kambosos Jr.
  • Lomachenko is the heavy betting underdog at -625.
  • Kambosos Jr. is the overwhelming betting underdog at +450.

Former boxing lightweight champions will collide this Sunday, as Vasiliy Lomachenko faces George Kambosos Jr. for the IBO and IBF World Lightweight world titles inside the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia. The former is coming off a loss in his previous fight, while the latter is fresh off a bounce-back win.

Although he dropped his last fight, Lomachenko remains the heavy betting favorite in boxing odds at -625 against Kambosos Jr., who oddsmakers tag as the +450 betting underdog.

Vasiliy Lomachenko Recent Fight Results

Lomachenko was a former two-time Olympic gold medalist before turning professional in 2013. He carried over his success from the amateur ranks by becoming a three-division world champion and captured world titles in the featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight divisions.

In his 20 professional fights, the Ukranian superstar only suffered three losses, two coming in his last five fights. His last appearance inside the ring was in May 2023, when he challenged Devin Haney for the undisputed lightweight world title, but came up short in a unanimous decision defeat.

George Kambosos Jr. Recent Fight Results

Kambosos Jr. is one of the best Australian boxers today. He was undefeated in his first 19 professional fights, which paved the way for him to earn a world title shot against Teofimo Lopez in November 2021. He maximized that opportunity and scored a split-decision victory to capture the IBF, WBA, and WBO lightweight world titles.

Since then, he has fought Haney twice for the undisputed 135-pound crown, but has been defeated on both occasions via unanimous decision. In July, Kambosos Jr. was pitted against Maxi Hughes and won via majority decision to capture the IBO World Lightweight belt.

Vasiliy Lomachenko vs. George Kambosos Jr.: Fight Analysis

Kambosos Jr. will have the advantages in terms of physicality over Lomachenko because he is 3 inches taller (5-foot-9 against 5-foot-6) and has 3 inches longer on his reach (68 inches compared to 65 inches). He is also younger by six years, which accounts for a youth and athletic edge for him.

Lomachenko’s extensive experience and impressive finish rate could prove to be his winning factors. Having faced numerous top contenders and world champions, he holds a 17% higher TKO/KO percentage at 65% compared to Kambosos Jr.’s 48% rate, showcasing his ability to secure victories decisively.

Both Kambosos Jr. and Lomachenko are known for their technical and cerebral fighting styles, leveraging their speed and power to inflict damage. However, a potential concern is their different stances, which could lead to accidental clashes of heads when throwing punches simultaneously.

The key for Lomachenko in this fight is to find his rhythm early and pound on the pressure against Kambosos Jr. This was his mistake last time around against Haney when he needed more time to find his groove. If he can have a great start in this upcoming fight, it will be a long night for Kambosos Jr.

On the other hand, Kambosos Jr. should bring back the form he used to defeat Lopez three years ago. His main problem is confidence. At times, he forgets how great of a fighter he is and is gun-shy to throw his combinations. This may be attributed to his lack of experience at the highest level, but if he can bring out his best version, this fight will be an all-time classic.
