The storied rivalry between the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets stretches back decades.

Here’s a look at the series’ history, all-time records, wins, and more:

Braves vs. Mets Series History

The Braves and Mets have met 913 times, with the Braves controlling the series 500-412-1. Last season, both teams were top competitors in the National League, reigniting the contention between the divisional rivals.

Many believe the rivalry dates back to the late 1960s with Tom Seaver. Seaver is widely remembered as one of the greatest pitchers of all time and one of the best to ever wear a Mets uniform. But, his big league career technically began with the Braves.

The Braves selected Seaver in the secondary phase of the January draft, with the last pick in the first round. But because the future Hall of Famer was still a University of Southern California student, he was deemed ineligible to sign. He had technically signed the contract, so the NCAA ruled that Seaver was not eligible to play in college either. Thus, the commissioner’s office set up a special lottery for Seaver, which landed him in New York. For the Braves, Seaver became “the one that got away.”

Three years later, the league expanded, and the two teams met in the first NLCS. The Mets swept the Braves in that series, and guess who was the winning pitcher in Game 1? Tom Seaver.

Fast forward to 1994. The Braves and Mets were placed in the same division through realignment, rekindling the rivalry that started with the struggle over Seaver.

Wins 11,011 4,716
Losses 10,865 5,062
Win Pct. .503 .482

World Series Titles 4 2

Throughout this season, the “rivalry” has been entirely one-sided. About a year ago, fans watched these two evenly-matched teams duke it out for the divisional title in the final days of the regular season. Today, the circumstances look incredibly different. The Braves are the best team in Major League Baseball. Meanwhile, the Mets are a shell of the squad that racked up 101 wins in 2022.

Next, the Mets will head to D.C. to face the Nationals before returning home to take on the Diamondbacks. The Braves will close out their series against the Cardinals before welcoming the Braves to Truist Park.
