Starting pitchers might have lost some importance in this new era of baseball, but there is still something special about watching the best pitchers take the mound every handful of days.

In 2023, those pitchers were Gerrit Cole of the New York Yankees and Blake Snell, who is now pitching for the San Francisco Giants after playing for the San Diego Padres last year.

Cole won the American League Cy Young award for his first such honor. Snell became the seventh pitcher to win in both leagues after claiming last year’s National League Cy Young award.

The betting odds for this market were pulled at the end of the regular season, but Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal was trading as a -5000 favorite in late September.

Skubal was the front-runner in this race for most of the year, trading at minus odds at the All-Star break. He opened with 18/1 odds to win the award in the preseason, becoming the most significant liability in this market.

Skubal finished with a 18-4 record and a 2.39 ERA in 31 starts. He recorded 228 strikeouts and 35 walks across 192 innings of work, lifting the Tigers to a postseason berth.

Atlanta Braves left-hander Chris Sale was a -3000 favorite before the market was pulled in late September. That gave him an implied probability of 96.77% to claim the first Cy Young award of his career.

Sale was one of the best stories in baseball this season. The 35-year-old hurler helped steady an Atlanta rotation that lost Spencer Strider to a season-ending injury.

In his first season with the Braves, Sale led the NL with 18 wins and a 2.38 ERA in 29 starts. It’s the first time since 2018 that he’s posted an ERA below 3.00.

Sale struck out 225 batters and walked 39 across 177 2/3 innings this season.
