Juan Soto will make his debut for the New York Mets on Opening Day when they travel to face the Houston Astros. The first pitch is set for 4:10 p.m. ET on Thursday at Daikin Park (formerly known as Minute Maid Park).
Expectations are as high as ever for the Mets after a blockbuster offseason to follow up last year’s run to the NLCS.
The Astros, meanwhile, saw their streak of seven straight ALCS appearances end last season. Then they let Alex Bregman walk in free agency and traded away Kyle Tucker.

Mets vs. Astros Opening Day Starting Pitchers
The Mets will give the nod to Clay Holmes, who was signed in the offseason to convert from a reliever to a starter. This will be his first start since 2018, when he started four games for the Pittsburgh Pirates as a rookie.
Framber Valdez will make his fourth straight Opening Day start for the Astros. Houston has dropped the last two openers.

Mets vs. Astros Prediction for Opening Day
Based on the updated MLB betting market, I’m taking New York’s moneyline price tag (+110) as my favorite Mets vs. Astros prediction for Opening Day.
On the surface, it’s fair to be skeptical about backing a converted reliever in his first start in seven years. But Holmes earned the ball in Game 1 for a reason.
Holmes, who was the New York Yankees’ closer this time last year, signed a three-year, $38 million deal with the Mets in the offseason. They signed him up for their rotation, and he’s looked ready for the opportunity this spring.
Holmes has a 1.29 ERA in four starts during spring training, striking out 15 batters across 14 innings. ZiPS projects Holmes to post a 3.61 ERA in 164 innings this year.
In addition, it’s easy to get excited about the Mets’ lineup after signing Soto. The top six batters are projected to have a wRC+ of 116 or better this year.
I like backing the Mets to win Soto’s debut, especially since they have won six of their past eight openers.
