The NIT, or National Invitation Tournament, is a postseason college basketball tournament that features good teams who just missed out on being selected for the bigger NCAA Tournament.

The NIT includes 32 teams, many of which would have been given March Madness bids if they had just won another game or two.

Unlike the NCAA Tournament, where games are played at neutral sites, many of the early-round NIT games are hosted by schools.

Host sites are determined by a bidding system, which can produce some funky results. For example, Oklahoma State – the very first team left out of the NCAA Tournament bracket – is the No. 1 seed in its NIT region. However, it must travel to play at Youngstown State.

The NIT semifinals, which are held at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, will take place on March 28.

The championship round – also played in Las Vegas – will take place on March 30.
