Based on Commanders odds, oddsmakers expect Washington to replicate their success from 2024.
Washington, currently 18/1 to win Super Bowl 60, simultaneously possesses loads of cap space to improve their roster before next season.
At $82.2 million in cap room, Washington owns the third-most space with which to work this offseason, per overthecap.com.
But, Washington’s free agent list is extensive, including Bobby Wagner and Jeremy Chinn. Last year, both players achieved a minimum 94% snap count share.
Commanders Cap Space: Free Agent Position Targets
Defense profiles as the obvious priority for Washington this offseason.
The Commanders offense achieved strong results last year, albeit against an easy set of defenses.
But Washington ranked 23rd in defensive DVOA in spite of facing the fourth-easiest set of opposing defenses, per ftnfantasy.com.
Retaining Wagner appears a top priority for the Commanders.
Last season, he was profiled as the only player who produced a PFF defensive grade north of 70 amongst players who participated in at least 50% of defensive snaps.
But beyond Wagner, a lot of work is required on a lackluster defense as they prepare to face a more difficult schedule.
Commanders Salary Cap Space: Player Targets
Poona Ford & Khalil Mack
It’s a tall task to acquire this duo from the Chargers, who also have loads of cap space.
Mack appears the more likely signing for Washington, who could upgrade on current left edge Clelin Ferrell via Mack.
The Commanders’ 4-3 defensive scheme also improves via Ford, who would presumably partner Jonathan Allen in the scheme.
Last season, Ford ranked 18th of 200 amongst all defensive players with at least 50% of defensive snaps played, per PFF.
For reference, Allen and 2024 interior partner Daron Payne failed to clear the snaps threshold AND didn’t play particularly effectively when they did.
If the LA duo arrives in Washington, it could take pressure off a weak secondary that also needs addressing.
