Mac Jones was drafted No. 15 overall by the Patriots in the 2021 quarterback draft class. Patriots fans hoped he would be the long-prophesied successor to Tom Brady.
Unfortunately, New England’s offense has been on a downward descent from the moment Brady left Beantown for Tampa, and Jones didn’t have the talent and playmaking ability to overcome a dreadful roster.
Most professional quarterbacks would have met similar fates in New England over these last few years, which is why Jacksonville was willing to bet on Jones as a reclamation project. The Jaguars acquired Jones in March in exchange for a 2024 sixth-round pick.
The Patriots ultimately used that pick on former Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Joe Milton, who has pushed Drake Maye for the starting gig this season.
In Jacksonville, Jones’ role is much simpler: He’s the backup to Trevor Lawrence.
