A first-round draft choice in 2019 out of Mississippi State, Washington Commanders defensive end Montez Sweat has shown flashes off the edge and is a vital piece of a forceful front seven, logging 29 sacks over four seasons.
Montez Sweat Salary
Sweat completed his four-year rookie contract after the 2022 campaign, with the Commanders picking up his fifth-year option heading into 2023. He’ll earn a fully guaranteed $11.5 million.
Montez Sweat Cap Hit
Sweat’s cap hit will mirror his fifth-year option at $11.5 million.
Montez Sweat Potential Extension
According to Ben Standig of the Athletic, Sweat expects to play out the 2023 season without a contract extension. He’ll hit the open market or be able to get franchise tagged in the spring of 2024.
After a rocky 2021 season filled with injuries and the death of his brother, Sweat played a full 2022 and recorded eight sacks. If he improves his numbers, potentially reaching double-digit sacks, he’ll be a hot commodity in free agency and come with a hefty price tag.
Sportrac measures his current extension to be worth $16.6 million annually over four years. Given the luxury of premier pass rushers, that number could approach $20 million annually on the open market.
