Based on Cleveland’s struggles away from home and Pittsburgh’s strong defensive record, my Steelers vs. Browns prediction is to tease Pittsburgh (-0.5).
Even though Cleveland has notched consecutive wins against Pittsburgh, this is a nightmare spot for them.
The Steelers have a full week to prepare for the Browns, while Cleveland has to travel on short rest after playing Monday night.
The Browns have also struggled immensely away from home this year.
Not since Week 2 against Jacksonville has Cleveland captured an outright win away from home. Conversely, the Steelers are 4-1 SU at home this year.
Although Mike Tomlin has struggled to cover as a favorite in his career, he’s generally good at parlaying a division win with another SU victory.
In his coaching career, Tomlin is 29-15 SU off a win by at least four points in a divisional game, including 12-2 when the Steelers closed as underdogs.
Shrink the sample down to games played since the 2018 season and Tomlin improves to 13-3 SU in the general spot, including 9-0 off a win as underdogs.
But the crux of my confidence in teasing the Steelers is that their defense is operating at such a high level.
The snow obviously aided the Browns offense, which amassed 5.5 yards per play in the first meeting.
But that came with Pittsburgh traveling on short rest. Without that advantage, I question how Cleveland moves the ball against a team eighth in defensive DVOA.
