- The RBC Heritage is April 17-20 from Harbour Town.
- Why Justin Thomas has a good chance of winning.
- Detailing why Patrick Cantlay and Jordan Spieth have good value.
Following a thrilling Masters, it will be another big week on the PGA Tour with the RBC Heritage from the iconic Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
It is a PGA Tour signature event, with all the biggest stars on the PGA Tour in the field, with the exception of Rory McIlroy and Hideki Matsuyama.ย
Scottie Scheffler, who is also the defending champion, has the best odds to win at +400.
Harbour Town is a Pete Dye design, known for its small greens. It is one of the shortest courses on the PGA Tour, so distance is not needed to have success here. It is about hitting the tree-lined fairways, hitting tiny greens and getting up-and-down when necessary.ย
The winning score has only exceeded 20-under once since 2012, so while birdies will be made, it will not be a complete birdie-fest.
I will be focusing on several key metrics, including Strokes Gained: Approach, Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green, GIR Gained, Fairways Gained, Strokes Gained: Putting and par-5 scoring.
I will also target players who have had success both here and at other Dye-designed courses.
*odds as of April 15
RBC Heritage Prediction
Scottie Scheffler is expected to win the RBC Heritage with a 20% implied probability, according to betting markets. Collin Morikawa is next at 9.09%.
Implied probability is the overall chance of a potential outcome in relation to the odds.
RBC Heritage Best Bets
Justin Thomas Outright Winner (+2000)
Thomas hasnโt won on the PGA Tour since the 2023 PGA Championship, but he appears closer than at any other point since.
While it was a relatively uninspiring T-36 finish at the Masters, I am actually staying away from most players who contended at Augusta. Four days of being in contention can be mentally draining, and there isnโt much time to recover prior to this event.
Thomas ranks high in a number of metrics needed to play well here, and heโs had a lot of success at Dye-designed courses of late. He finished T-33 at the Players Championship, solo second at The American Express (two of three courses are Dye-designs), T-5 at the Travelers Championship last year and T-5 at this event a year ago.
He obviously has the iron play and shot-making needed to play well here, the question is staying in play off the tee. Fortunately for Thomas, since the course does not play long at all, he can hit irons off some tees and still have scoring clubs in his hands.
Thomas certainly is close to winning again; the question is just how soon it will come.
Patrick Cantlay Top-10 Pick (+160)
No player has had more success at Harbour Town without winning than Cantlay.
Cantlay has teed it up here seven times, and in six of those appearances, heโs finished no worse than seventh, including five top-3 finishes. He lost in a playoff in 2022 and finished T-3 a year ago.
Like Thomas, heโs had a ton of success on other Dye-designed courses, including T-12 at the Players Championship, T-5 at The American Express and T-5 at the Travelers Championship a year ago.
He is a steady player who hits a ton of fairways and greens, which is exactly what is needed to succeed this week.
Cantlay certainly has what it takes to win this week, but I am opting for a safer play with a top-10 finish.
Jordan Spieth Top-20 Pick (+100)
Spieth enters coming off a solid weekend at the Masters, where rounds of 69 and 70 propelled him to a T-14 finish and some solid momentum.
With back-to-back top-15 finishes, Spieth returns to a course heโs had a decent amount of success at, including winning in 2022 and losing in a playoff the following year.ย
