  • Virginia Tech vs. Miami kicks off Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
  • Miami has lost its ACC opener in three consecutive years.
  • Virginia Tech has lost to Rutgers and Vanderbilt but is 3-1 to the over.

After years of teasing the college football odds market, the Miami Hurricanes finally appear to have built a real contender. They’ve surged into the top 10 after outscoring their first four opponents 209-41.

Now, Miami is headed into conference play, and the first opponent is an old Big East rival. Can the huge margins keep rolling in Miami Gardens?

Virginia Tech vs. Miami Preview

Heading into this Week 5 game, the script has completely flipped on how these two teams were viewed from the preseason to now.

Just a month ago, Virginia Tech was viewed as a trendy dark horse ACC playoff pick. In the preseason, it was the Hokies who had a capable, underrated quarterback and a reinvigorated defense. There were 21 starters back. Year 3 of the Brent Pry experience was when Blacksburg would return to relevance.

Instead, it’s Cam Ward and Miami that are now projected as the class of the ACC. Miami is the highest-ranked ACC team with the calendar approaching October. The Hurricanes are increasingly being penciled in as a first-round bye playoff team.

Virginia Tech, meanwhile, has lost to Vanderbilt and Rutgers.

That reversal of fortunes has had a pretty profound impact on this game in the college football spreads market.

Virginia Tech was priced as an 8.5-point favorite in the summer lookahead market. Now, after Miami’s perfect start and Tech’s uninspiring first month of football, Miami is quickly moving toward 20-point favorite status.

Virginia Tech vs. Miami Prediction

I am predicting Over 55.5 in Friday night’s game between Miami and Virginia Tech.

The dramatic line movement in the point spread market – both from the summer to Sunday market open and from Sunday to now – leads me to believe that there’s a lot of value on the Virginia Tech side of this game.

Beyond that, Miami has lost its ACC opener each of the last three years and is 4-12 ATS in ACC games under head coach Mario Cristobal. If I’m betting a side, I’m taking the points with Virginia Tech and hoping for a semi-competitive game.

However, I think the best place to get involved is the total. Miami and Virginia Tech are a combined 7-1 to the over so far this year, and I’ve seen little reason to believe thus far that Virginia Tech’s defense can stop Ward, who is currently the favorite in the Heisman Trophy odds market.

I’m betting a fractional unit on the over, and I’m considering adding a little Tech +19.5/Over 55.5 parlay sprinkle on top.

Virginia Tech vs. Miami Pick: Over 55.5; Lean: Virginia Tech +19.5
