Preseason games don’t have overtime. If the teams are tied at the end of regulation, the game is declared a tie.

The NFL preseason has seen its fair share of changes over the years, with the slate being reduced to three games in 2021 so a 17th regular season game could be added.

One major distinction between the preseason and regular season is overtime, with preseason games ending in a tie after the four quarters are completed. There is already controversy about the possibility of injuries and playing time in these exhibition games, which adds to the reasoning of not playing the additional period.

The NFL will look to keep expanding their regular season schedule and continue to limit the preseason.
