The first regular-season game of the 2024 NFL season will be played on Thursday, Sept. 5. The Kansas City Chiefs will host a yet-to-be-announced team. (Last year, it was the Lions.)

It will be the 23rd straight season that opens with the NFL Kickoff Game. The tradition was established in 2002 when the New York Giants hosted the San Francisco 49ers.

When Does the 2024 NFL Preseason Start?

The first preseason game of the 2024 NFL cycle is the Hall of Fame Game on Thursday, Aug. 1. The Bears and Texans will scrimmage in Canton, Ohio.

The game – officially called the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game – was first played in 1962, one year before the Pro Football Hall of Fame opened its doors in Canton, Ohio.

It was played for 49 consecutive years, from 1962-2010, until the lockout forced its cancellation in 2011. The game was also canceled in 2016 (poor field conditions) and 2020 (COVID-19).
