If you want to break down the analytics for a 16-team mixed event, go right ahead.
If you see the tandem of last weekโs Hero World Challenge runner-up Tom Kim and recent CME Group Championship winner Jeeno Thitikul at the top of the odds board and donโt even want to look any further, I get it.
Hey, if you want to just skip this one altogether, itโs understandable. (Although I wouldnโt advise not betting something which is eminently bet-able.)
Me? Iโm gonna play a few, wellโฆ letโs call โem โeducated hunchesโ for this weekโs Grant Thornton Invitational, eschewing the single-digit options for a pair of slightly bigger prices.
Grant Thornton Invitational Picks
Sahith Theegala/Alison Corpuz (+1100)
During a week when stats and records arenโt worth a whole lot, Iโm going to focus on intangibles. And thereโs no better intangible than two partners already knowing each other and having played lots of golf together.
Theegala and Corpuz have been friends since their childhoods โ enough that when Corpuz captured last yearโs U.S. Womenโs Open, Theegalaโs family was there to celebrate.
This week, sheโs a late replacement for Rose Zhang, but that only tells me how much she wanted this opportunity.
As for Theegala, he finished T-8 at the Hero, with scores of 66 and 67 mixed in, which should lead to him being in solid form for this one.
Cameron Young/Lauren Coughlin (+1400)
At this number, this is my favorite play on the board.
One of them has struggled to find the winnerโs circle at the highest level, while the other couldnโt stop winning this summer. It doesnโt take an expert to realize that the former is Young, whose PGA Tour top-three odometer remains on 10, and the latter is Coughlin, who earned her first two career LPGA victories, then looked dominant at the Solheim Cup.
Perhaps having a teammate will provide the spark that Young needs to claim a trophy. He started with a 64 to claim the opening-round lead last week and while it was followed by three consecutive scores in the 70s, he isnโt far off from playing well.
Coughlin is ranked 94 spots higher in the Rolex Ranking than she was to start the year, which should have her brimming with confidence.
