Alex Bregman Next Team Prediction: Where Will the Veteran Land?

With spring training rapidly approaching, Alex Bregman remains unsigned.

Bregman, who entered the offseason as one of the top free agents, has spent his entire career (since 2016) with the Houston Astros. But the 31-year-old third baseman is expected to land a big payday to move on this winter.

So, where will Bregman end up?

Alex Bregman Next Team Odds & Favorites

The BetMGM online sportsbook doesnโ€™t offer MLB odds on Alex Bregmanโ€™s next team, but four teams stand out as the best fit to add the veteran infielder:

  • Red Sox
  • Tigers
  • Blue Jays
  • Yankees

Of the four teams, Iโ€™d argue that the Red Sox and Tigers are the clear favorites to sign Bregman. A signing with Boston would prompt other decisions, including a potential move to second base for Bregman.ย

On the other hand, Detroitโ€™s pitch to Bregman could depend more on the contract.

A reunion with the Astros has seemed unlikely since they traded Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs for third baseman Isaac Paredes. Houston doesnโ€™t appear to be in the business of handing out sizable contracts.

Alex Bregman Next Team Prediction: Tigers Should Add 3B

The Tigers have been my MLB betting prediction for landing Bregman since the start of the offseason. It just makes too much sense on paper.

For one, it would set up a reunion between Bregman and manager A.J. Hinch, who guided Houston to the 2017 World Series ring and another pennant in 2019. Hinch enters the 2025 campaign as the AL Manager of the Year odds favorite.

The Tigers should explore ways to build on their momentum from last year. From Aug. 11 through the end of the regular season, they posted the best record in baseball, securing an unlikely playoff berth before beating the Astros in the AL wild-card series.

Hinch pushed all the right buttons last year, particularly with pitching decisions (behind Tarik Skubal) and pinch-hitting substitutions. However, Detroit could afford to be more aggressive by adding foundational talent to its roster.

The Tigers ranked 26th in total payroll last year, but they werenโ€™t afraid to spend when they were winning the AL Central every year between 2011-14:

  • 2014: $172 million payroll (fourth in MLB)
  • 2013: $157 million payroll (fifth)
  • 2012: $143 million payroll (fifth)
  • 2011: $111 million payroll (12th)

The Tigers’ playoff odds would benefit by bringing in Bregman.

Alex Bregmanโ€™s Projected Contract

According to MLB Trade Rumors, Bregman is projected to sign a seven-year, $182 million contract this offseason.

Itโ€™s worth noting that this projection came at the start of the offseason and before many notable free agents landed better contracts than expected. Bregman might be looking for a deal closer to $200 million.

Last winter, Bregman turned down a six-year, $156 million contract extension offer from the Astros.
