When Justin Verlander agreed to a one-year contract with the San Francisco Giants, he ensured a second straight season as the oldest MLB player.ย  Despite rostering the 42-year-old three-time Cy Young winner, the Giants didn’t become one of the oldest teams this season.

In fact, the Giants entered the season closer to the youngest team โ€” in both age and team rank โ€” than the oldest team. With an average age of 29.23, the team’s Opening Day roster ranked as the 16th-oldest.

Youngest & Oldest MLB Teams Ranked by Age

Oldest MLB Teams in 2025

The Los Angeles Dodgers are the oldest MLB team this season. The average age of players on their Opening Day roster was 31.48, just higher than the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Angels.

1. Dodgers: 31.48

Despite not rostering any of the five oldest MLB players in 2025, the Dodgers are the oldest team. Relief pitchers Luis Garcia and Kirby Yates are the club’s oldest players; they both turned 38 earlier this year.

The Dodgers’ payroll also ranks first among all teams.

2. Padres: 30.74

The Padres also don’t have one of the five oldest MLB playersย  โ€” and only have one player born earlier than 1989, Martin Maldonado โ€” but still have the second-oldest roster. Only one player โ€” Jackson Merrill โ€” was born after 1999.

3. Rangers: 30.68

The Rangers third-oldest average age is partially aided by 16 players born in 1995 or earlier, including 36-year-old two-time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom.

4. Blue Jays: 30.55

The Toronto Blue Jays have one 40-year-old โ€” Max Scherzer โ€” and zero players born after 1999. Outfielder Alan Roden is their youngest player; he’ll turn 26 years old in December.

5. Cubs: 30.28

The Cubs’ roster has three players born in the 2000s โ€” including 23-year-old outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong โ€” but also have one 40-year-old (Justin Turner) and two more players born in the 1980s, Caleb Thielbar and Ryan Pressly.

Youngest MLB Teams in 2025

The Miami Marlins are the youngest MLB team this season. The average of players on their Opening Day roster was 27.41, just lower than the Tampa Bay Rays and Washington Nationals.

1. Marlins: 27.41

The Marlins aren’t one of four teams with a 21-year-old on their active roster, but have four other players born in the 2000s, including infielder Javier Sanoja. He won’t turn 23 until September.

2. Rays: 27.57

Routinely one of the youngest teams in baseball, the Rays have the third-youngest player in Junior Caminero (21) and three other players born in the 2000s. They also don’t have any players born earlier than 1991.

3. Nationals: 27.89

The Nationals entered the season with a league-high six players born in the 2000s, including their youngest player, outfielder James Wood. The Maryland native won’t turn 23 until September.

4. Guardians: 28.07

Despite a reunion with Carlos Santana, the Guardians remained one of the youngest teams in the league. Santana โ€” born in 1986 โ€” is by far the team’s oldest player; he’s their only player born before 1990.

5. Brewers: 28.31

Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio is the youngest MLB player again this season. He turned 20 years old just before Opening Day last year and is still only 21 years old for his second big-league season.
