After falling in the divisional round last season, Detroit is -250 to make the playoffs for a third straight season.
Comparatively, the Lions are +200 to miss the playoffs in 2025.
Prediction: Will the Detroit Lions Make the Playoffs?
Based on the Lions’ strong offensive record and the scheduling advantages it received, I predict the Lions Make the Playoffs (-250).
Although I backed the under on the Lions over/under wins, I’m exercising some caution when it comes to a postseason futures bet.
Recently, the NFL handed the Lions an extreme advantage against one of the most difficult schedules in the league.
Per sharpfootballanalysis.com, Detroit owns a +13 net rest advantage next season, the biggest in the league. Of 17 games, eight come with Detroit owning more rest than its opponent.
Perhaps most critically, a number of those games come away from home, where the schedule is more difficult. Of those eight games, five come away from home.
That said, I’m not willing to lay this much juice on a team with a ton of regression indicators next season.
The Lions lost both coordinators to head coaching positions and won a number of close games last season.
Detroit finished 1.5 wins over expected thanks to a 4-0 record in field-goal games and a 7-2 record in touchdown games.
While a 6-0 record in the division looks impressive, it’s worth noting that three wins came by three or fewer points.
Defensively, I expect the Lions to take a step back in the 2025 rankings.
Last season, the Lions ranked fifth in defensive DVOA against the 11th-hardest set of opposing offenses. Based on 2024 ratings, the Lions are slated to face the fourth-hardest set in 2025.
The team’s offensive prowess may do enough to balance that decline: Detroit finished third in offensive DVOA last season against the fourth-toughest set of defenses, per ftnfantasy.com.
However, it’s worth noting Detroit lost the second-fewest games to injuries on offense last season. If that changes, it could doom Detroit’s postseason prospects.
All of that said, the rest edges scare me enough to stay away from a bet on the Lions making the playoffs.
