The Pirates plan to start Skenes after he posted a 1.96 ERA and 170 strikeouts in 133 innings last year. The Marlins will roll with Alcántara, who didn’t allow an earned run while striking out 10 batters across 12 1/3 innings this spring.

According to the updated MLB betting market, I’ll back Pittsburgh’s moneyline value (-160) as my favorite Pirates vs. Marlins prediction for Opening Day.

That’s because Skenes is the best pitcher in baseball and should be priced accordingly in all markets. He’s the NL Cy Young odds favorite for a reason.
OOPSY, a projection system at FanGraphs, has Skenes finishing with a 5.2 WAR, trailing only Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal at 5.3. OOPSY projects Skenes for a 2.74 ERA and 230 strikeouts in 200 innings.
Alcántara is an MLB Comeback Player of the Year candidate, but besting Skenes in his first start in over a year is a tall task.
