Rumor has it the Los Angeles Rams are preparing for a dramatic offseason full of change. Several players are popping up in leaked trade rumors, which suggests a front office that is trying to stage a bidding market for its top assets.

One of the biggest changes that team leadership can make is sending Super Bowl-winning quarterback Matthew Stafford out the door.

The veteran signal-caller was the offensive lynchpin that helped the Rams secure a ring in February 2022, so a trade would be no small decision.

Yet Stafford, who recently turned 37, has a contract worth tens of millions of dollars. The front office may feel like the Rams – who are moving back toward head coach Sean McVay’s roots with a domineering ground game – would be financially better suited with a younger, cheaper quarterback.

Stafford could still take the field for Los Angeles in 2025. That said, don’t be surprised if he ends up throwing to Malik Nabors in a few months.

Matthew Stafford Contract

On March 19, 2022, Matthew Stafford signed a new 4-year contract extension with the Rams worth $160 million. The contract currently runs through the 2026 NFL season.

Stafford agreed to restructure some of the deal in the summer of 2024, slightly altering the structure of his payments and the Rams’ short-term cap flexibility.
