The Brewers sent Burnes to the Orioles in exchange for Hall and Ortiz, a pair of promising young players who had a limited path to playing time in Baltimore’s loaded farm system.
Hall will get his crack at making the initial starting rotation after being a reliever for the Orioles. He pitched in 29 MLB games over two years, tossing a 4.36 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 33 total innings. Ortiz could crack the starting lineup as an infielder, too.
Hoskins, 31, was an intriguing addition to help solidify first base and provide a veteran presence in the middle of the lineup. His signing came before the trade, indicating the Brewers might still believe in their chances of winning this year.

Prediction: Brewers over 76.5 wins (-110)
The NL Central is as competitive as it has been in recent years while the Brewers are rebuilding. But this win projection counts them out too much.
FanGraphs projects 80 wins for Milwaukee, while PECOTA has a projection of 79.3. Either way, this number is a touch low for a team that has cleared its win total in six of its last seven full seasons.
The Brewers haven’t had a losing season since 2016, a streak that could end this summer. But don’t be surprised if they hover around .500 for most of the year.
