  • The Nationals went 71-91 in 2023 for another fifth-place finish in the NL East.
  • Washington is +750 to record the fewest wins in MLB during the 2024 season.

Since winning the World Series in 2019, the Washington Nationals havenโ€™t been able to escape the bottom of the National League East. They have placed fifth in their division for the last four years.

MLB betting markets expect more of the same, with the Nationals having some of the longest preseason odds entering the 2024 season.

Nationals Futures Odds

Win Total: 66.5
NL East: +10000
NL Pennant: +12500
World Series: +25000

Every MLB odds market rates the Nationals a long shot. Only the Chicago White Sox, Colorado Rockies, and Oakland Athletics have worse odds of winning the World Series or their respective pennants.

Interestingly enough, Washingtonโ€™s win total increased by seven games after it won 71 contests to clear a preseason win total of 59.5 last year.ย

The Nationals have finished below their preseason win total in three of the past four seasons since winning it all.

Nationals Offseason Moves

The Nationals had a relatively quiet offseason following last yearโ€™s 71-91 campaign, finishing 33 games behind the Atlanta Braves.

Gallo is the main addition from the winter, as he signed for one year in late January. Gallo spent last season with the Minnesota Twins, hitting .301 in 111 games. He adds a veteran lefty bat with positional versatility for a young team.

Nationalsย 2024 Betting Prediction

Prediction: Nationals to record fewest wins in MLB (+750)

The Athletics (+140) and Rockies (+220) are solid favorites to finish the 2024 season with the fewest wins, but the Nationals are closer to that group than these odds might indicate.

Washington is focused on the future, meaning promising prospects like Dylan Crews and James Wood could taste the big leagues this season. That could also put veterans on the block before the deadline.

PECOTA projects Washington to post the second-worst record in baseball this year with 58.1 wins, besting only Coloradoโ€™s 57.3 victories. FanGraphs also has the Nationals finishing 29th with 64.8 wins, just two games better than the Rockies.

It could be a competitive last-place race, and Washington offers the best odds in the preseason.
